For the love of feta, steak and bacon

First day after finishing my week-long detox and I thoroughly enjoyed my chai today, and then my man made me a fantastic “you made it through you’re detox” meal. Started out on the BBQ:


If you Like me on Facebook, you’ll know that while he was cooking it, I was on Facebook on my cell, and his cell phone beeped. He then said jokingly “if that’s you beeping me while I’m making dinner, I’m kicking your ass, woman!”, followed by him “serving” me this:


Smartass! Give me the meat!

That’s better…for the love of feta and bacon-wrapped steak! He of course had to take a picture of me about to eat my congratulatory meal, and yes, I’m sitting cross-legged on the couch:


Horrible picture but I wasn’t going to stay still for long. He was keeping me from bacon-wrapped steak! I couldn’t finish the whole plate BUT, you’ll notice that the feta, bacon and steak are all gone. 😉

Summer #Detox – Recap of Day 7 – Final Day!

Today is my final day on Hello to Healthy‘s Summer Detox. The smoothies have been delicious! My last morning smoothie is mango:

I had leftovers for lunch today, and snacks of carrots and spicy hummus. My man took over for dinner again…and although it didn’t follow the menus provided for the detox, followed all the rules, and was as delicious as it looks:


I will be keeping some of the recipes as ones to refer to often, especially having rediscovered the yumminess that is eggplant! 😉

I’ll be honest and say that, with our lifestyle, and my kids’ sensory issues, eating vegan food is not one I can maintain. I feel like I spent most of my time cooking, was often hungry, went through the headaches and bloating (tmi?) that the program “warns” of, and missed my usual comfort foods (especially on Saturday when I attended a funeral and therefore had a very emotional day), but I’m glad I did it. It was really a test of willpower, but I also rediscovered my enjoyment of cooking. When the kids were at their dad’s, I was able to spend Sunday cooking some of the recipes, and with being able to use so many fresh ingredients between my garden and my mom’s, it was that much yummier!

Now to monitor how I feel as I reintroduce my regular foods back…wish me luck!

Summer #Detox – Recap of Day 6

Today, I started with using each of the fruit from my frozen blend:

I decided to make the cleansing salad again for lunch, adding apple and fresh mint this time (one of the options suggested in the recipe):


The great thing about this salad was that the apple was the only ingredient this time from the store. The cucumber and mint were from my garden; the beets and carrots were from my mom’s garden…with some really funky carrots!


My man’s friends joined us for dinner…so of course I received a lot of teasing about not being a “good hunter” for being on this detox. I’ll admit that I was VERY tempted to eat the spaghetti my man was making…it smelt sssoooo good. The next thing I knew, my man put this down in front of me. Look at how TALL it is!!

The guys stopped teasing me when they saw that! I couldn’t even finish it all…here’s the “carnage”:


One more day to go…and then I think I have a steak calling my name…sorry Anneka, but I miss meat! 😉

Summer #Detox – Recap of Day 5

I completely forgot to take a picture of my smoothie for Day 5 of my detox. It was strawberry though. I find that I wake up now wanting my smoothie, but I have to have my hot water with lemon first. I think the smoothie is my motivation to drink the hot water and lemon even faster.


Since the kids are now at their dad’s for a week, I figured I would try some new recipes from the detox menu as I had time to experiment today. First experiment was kale chips (especially since my mom had some in her garden, so it was nice and fresh!). I’ll be honest and admit that I thought Anneka was crazy. Kale is weird. It’s not lettuce, not spinach and frankly, when I tried it raw, was not my taste. After cleaning the kale, prepping and cooking for about 8 mins in the oven, I’m a believer! The kale chips don’t look very appetizing but they were awesome! They were even very filling, so I think I’ll be keeping this recipe for when I’m having those chip cravings at a certain time of the month. 😉


I also made some more french fries from the potatoes we brought back from my mom’s garden. Even better than the ones I had on Day 1, and I think it’s because the potatoes were really fresh.


Then I made the eggplant tomato bake for dinner. Unfortunately, I left it in the oven for a bit longer than the recipe suggested so again, it didn’t look too appetizing, but I tried it…and went back for a second bowl. Again, another yummy recipe! It was even nice to use some of the basil, fresh from my own garden!



My only craving today was mid-afternoon when I was really tired (yesterday was a really emotional day) so I drank some water and took a nap – oh the things one can do when the kids aren’t home. 😉

Summer #Detox – Recap of Days 3 & 4

My 3rd day on Hello to Healthy‘s detox consisted of my morning yummy smoothie, peach this time.

Then the rest of the day, I had leftovers from the day before…that’s the “beauty” of all the recipes being in portions for 2 – 4 people. 😉 I was still hungry in the evening so I cut up a plate of carrots and cucumbers, which I enjoyed with some spicy hummus.


My 4th day on the detox was really tough because I spent most of the day out of town at a funeral, then a visit to my parents’ place. So, although I started the day with my smoothie, lunch was kinda difficult because we were at the funeral reception so I chose the healthiest option I could, trying to stay as close to the detox meals as possible. Since I’m an emotional eater, it was a tough day related to cravings but I fought through it.


On my 3rd day, my man also surprised me by coming home a day early from camping (yay!!!), so he took over cooking for the 4th night and although it wasn’t the detox menus, it still definitely fell within the parameters…plus tasted as awesome as it looks!


Tomorrow night, I’m on my own as he’s working so it won’t look nearly as good, but hopefully will taste yummy still. 🙂

Summer #Detox – Recap of Day 2

Started Day 2 of the Summer Detox with hot water and lemon, and it wasn’t as shocking to my palette as it was on Day 1. It was quite refreshing actually … then I started looking forward to my smoothie. I made today’s smoothie with the peaches from a blend of frozen fruit:


And yet again, it was yummy!


The rest of my meals and snacks were leftovers from Day 1. By eating the stir-fry at lunchtime instead of dinner, I found I wasn’t as hungry mid-afternoon.  I still had a sweet craving after dinner, but it was manageable.


The big difference I felt today was a mild headache off and on throughout the day. Nothing serious, but it was a possible side-effect the detox in the first day or two.

Starting My First Summer #Detox


Anneka Street, from Hello to Healthy, is a New York-based nutrition and health counselor, and asked me to review her Summer Detox program. (The fact that she’s my cousin just makes her that much more awesome…not that I’m biased or anything!) She had no idea that the day she asked me, I had had 3 random conversations within 48 hours about detoxes and cleanses, so I figured it was “destined” for me to try this. For the record, I have never done a detox or cleanse of any kind. I didn’t even have potential allergies as a kid so never even had to do an elimination diet or anything similar. My knowledge of detoxes meant replacing food with some horribly disgusting drink of some kind. Doesn’t sound attractive.

Anneka assured me her program wasn’t that. It’s more about replacing current foods with healthier ones. I also told her that I’m NOT a cook…and why would I need to be? My man is half italian, and it shows in his cooking! Also, my cooking is completely ruled by my kids’ sensory issues. My son will (for the most part) only eat foods in certain shapes, preferably round, and he loves spice. My daughter however, can’t stand any kind of spice…she even complains her nose is burning if I’m eating pasta and veggies with lemon pepper! Needless to say, every meal is a juggling act to find something each of us will eat. So, other than the bowls of fruit and veggie sticks with humus, my kids won’t eat anything in this detox…but oh my! The recipes look really ggooooddd! I’m almost looking forward to eating the meals…but don’t tell anyone. :p

There’s a mini questionnaire to start the detox:

1.  What are your top three goals for the detox

  • reboot my system to reach for healthier choices
  • get rid of my I’m-falling-asleep-standing-up mid afternoon crash
  • lose weight

2.  Do you have any food/drink cravings or addictions (ie: caffeine, alcohol, sugar, wheat, etc)

  • chai, chai and more chai!!
  • salt…especially in the form of chips

3.  What will be your biggest challenge during the detox?

  • I’m an emotional eater…if I’m stressed / bored / tired / sad / etc, I reach for food.
  • Not having my daily chai. It’s my form of “me time” each day that recentres me. Anneka suggested I get a new herbal tea to enjoy instead of my chai made completely with milk. Her preference is licorice. Sounds interesting…and I hope it doesn’t make me crave Twizzlers, like a certain time of the month does. 😉
  • Time. For the first half of the detox, my kids are at home, during summer break. Thankfully though, all the recipes suggest making bigger batches of the base (ie: brown rice) so it’s faster for subsequent meals.
  • It asks that you not eat after 7pm (8pm at the latest). Because of my kids’ schedules and food intake/preferences, I usually eat my dinner after my son goes to bed around 8pm. If I’m eating earlier though, it will hopefully motivate me to get to bed earlier…otherwise, I’ll need to eat more when I’m hungry again in a few hours. 😉

4.  What do you look forward to during the detox?

  • Hopefully rebooting my system to reduce food cravings…especially at a certain time of the month. My food cravings then are really out of control now!
  • Getting back into the routine of cooking and eating “real” food instead of eating what my kids will eat. I don’t have sensory issues. Food is awesome!

5.  How do you plan to change your diet and lifestyle after the detox?

  • I plan to reincorporate some of the stress-reduction suggestions offered for success in this detox: turn off electronics, exercise, meditate, journal writing, etc. I’ve gotten out of the habit of these activities, and want/need to start again. I have very physical reactions to stress (panic attacks, gallstones, former high blood pressure, etc) so I need to always be working at reducing stress in my life. Not easy. Especially with my kids’ special needs.

So basically, I’m hoping this detox will reboot me back to when I used to meal plan, exercise, write in my journal, etc. Hopefully when my kids see me doing it, they will want to join me too.
