Fill in the Blank Friday – 03/09

I missed last week’s Fill in the Blank Friday so I thought I should catch up…

1.  The highlight of my week was going skating with my daughter’s school, specifically seeing the happiness on her face when I walked into the dressing room. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make it because I came down with the flu earlier in the week but I had enough strength to go, and I’m so glad I did. My daughter was so happy! The next highlight of my week was getting roses from my man, just because. Swoon…

2.   If I had to classify my interior design aesthetic it would be…still to be determined. I like having things comfy and cozy, and my choice of colour is green.

3.  My first vehicle was a Honda Civic 4-door…I miss driving a Honda, but for now, am a proud driver of a sexy mini-van.

4. An item I need to have in my day in order to function is my cell phone and my computer (yes, I’m counting them as only one thing), and a close second is at least one cup of chai but there are days I have actually done without a chai, surprisingly.

5. My favorite way to waste time is Facebook.

6. Right now I could really go for having my full appetite back. It’s coming back slowly from the flu but there’s yummy bacon-wrapped steak in my fridge, made by my man, just waiting for me and I haven’t been able to enjoy it yet.

7.  This weekend I will be spending 3 days straight with just my daughter, while my son spends the weekend with their dad. Neither of us get much one-on-one time with either of the kids, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Fill in the Blank Friday – First of 2012

1.   One of my favorite things to do when I have free time is curl up with my man and watch a movie, or go skating with him and/or my kids.

2.   When I have free time I tend to blog, visit my favourite websites, or call a friend.

3.  If I had an entire day completely to myself I would actually do those quality “me-time” things I never have time to do…wander around a bookstore, go for a walk (well, not when it’s -25 degrees Celsius like it is now), enjoy a chai, get a massage, or maybe just spend the day at the lake reading a book, etc.

4.  I would prefer to spend my free time (alone or with others…) with others. I’m an extrovert through and through, which means I rejuvenate by being with others.

5.  Most of my free time happens on weekends when my kids are at their dad’s place.

6.  The best thing about free time is the possibilities of what you can do with that free time.

7.  The next time I have free time I should probably    be cleaning, doing laundry, getting more organized, etc   but instead, I’ll probably be trying to do as little as possible, whatever that looks like at that moment.

Happy new year!

Life Lessons Learned…While Skating

With the kids off for two weeks for Christmas break, but my son still having IBI therapy 3 days this week, I have spent some great quality time with my daughter.  On Tuesday, among other regular things we did for the day, I took her skating, and we had a blast!

The first time she went skating was with her father and a friend of his last year.  I’ll admit that I was a bit upset he had taken her skating for her first time as he doesn’t know how to skate whereas I’m a former skating coach.  On Tuesday, she was so excited about going skating “on a skating rink, for the first time ever!”.  I was quite nostalgic that we were going skating on the rink I had spent literally thousands of hours on until an injury forced me to quit skating at 17 years old.

On her first lap around the rink, my daughter was scared, cautious and deliriously happy (honestly, I didn’t think that combination was possible!).  She held on for dear life to the boards with one hand and me with the other.  She had a mini panic when she almost lost her footing, but I was able to correct her balance enough that she didn’t fall, so I seized the teaching opportunity.  I told her that I had her, and that I would never let anything hurt her.

That seemed to calm her fears and, as we continued onto the 2nd lap of the rink, her grip on me and the boards lessened, and she didn’t seem to panic when we had to go around kids smaller than her who were taking up space at the boards with their parents.

In the next laps around the rink, her confidence grew and she would venture out from the boards a little more each time, never letting go of my hand, constantly talking about this being her first time skating in an arena, and we both had perma-smiles on our faces.  She learnt how to fall without hurting herself and she would actually laugh her head off each time she did – I’ve never seen that from a kid, and I coached kids for 8 years!  We would spend a few seconds figuring out what shapes and patterns the snow from the fall made on her pants. She’s still working on learning how to get up by herself.

She surprised me when the buzzer went off to tell everyone it was time to get off the ice by asking if she could skate across the rink by herself to get off the ice. We waited until the majority of people were at the exit of the rink, skated a bit closer, I reminded her how to balance herself with her arms out and where to put the pressure and strength in her arms, and SHE DID IT!!! She skated across the width of the ice all by herself!!  She even told me to take a picture:

I love the look of pure joy on her face!  Like mother, like daughter: not only do people comment on how much we look alike (someone even said when we were out with my man and his son today that they didn’t even have to guess who she belonged to when they saw me), but she’s a natural born skater. She can’t wait to go again tomorrow…and neither can I!!

Lessons she learned while skating (and honestly, I needed to relearn some of them too!):

  1. Mommy’s ALWAYS there for you
  2. Always look out for those who are smaller than you
  3. Laugh at yourself, even when you fall down
  4. Make the best of every situation
  5. It’s ok to lean on others to help you get back up

My Happiness List

Optimom is famous for giving out “homework” to help people discover their passion in life. My homework was to ask 5 others how they define happiness. Have to admit that I haven’t asked people, other than posting it on Twitter, but have definitely been through lots of reflection in determining how I define happiness.

The first things that popped into my head were all related to my kids; when:

  • they were born
  • they smile
  • we have cuddle time
  • they are playing together and not trying to kill eachother ;)
  • my kids wink at me
  • DD makes her cute sleeping sounds
  • DS hugs me so hard that I think my head is going to pop off
  • I wake up to find DD has crawled into bed with me overnight
  • DS hugs me and says “home”

All of these are great HOWEVER, I realized that my happiness was being determined by someone else. More reflection required.

So, I started thinking back to when I have felt happiest and when people tell me my smile is the biggest. Here’s my “happy list” and why:

  • Dancing – whether it’s lessons or out with friends. I’m trained in classical ballet and just love any kind of dance!
  • Skating – I took lessons for years and years. There’s something very “freeing” when I’m on the ice
  • Water – I lived in Vancouver, BC for a number of years and, now my favourite place in Hamilton is down at the waterfront.
  • Public Speaking – yup, one of the top fears for almost everyone else in the world is actually one of my “happy places”
  • Go Karting – my (then) hubby took me go-karting once and I absolutely loved it!
  • Reading – the journey is endless
  • Writing – there’s something freeing about just starting to write, whether it’s my blog or journaling
  • Helping Others – I’m a true Libra…helping others is what drives me!

I’m sure other things will pop into my head as I further reflect on this question…but that’s why @optimom is so awesome. Very simple homework assignments that inspire true reflection.

So, I turn the homework over to you now…what makes you happiest?

PS – I was not paid for this post…I happen to be blessed to know Optimom IRL (in real life)
